Microsoft SQL Server Standard Edition comes with three powerful tools to help businesses manage their data.

  1. SSRS: SQL SERVER REPORTING SERVICES: Commonly used by small businesses to automate reporting.
  2. SSIS: SQL SERVER INTEGRATION SERVICES: This is a powerful data manipulation tool rarely used by small businesses
  3. SSAS: SQL SERVER ANALYSIS SERVICES: This is another feature of SQL ignored by small business data providers, it can help reduce the load and increase the speed of your ‘live’ database,  and , allow staff to create their own custom reports.

Microsoft Excel has powerful Pivot Tables and Graphs to help managers make sense of large tables of data

  1. Pivot tables are not used by many small companies who do not realise their power
  2. Pivot tables do require some training and set up but will make your excel users much more productive
  3. Pivot Tables Summarise your data
  4. Graph your data and easily visualise trends and outliers

Power BI

  1. Setup is much more advanced than excel pivot tables
  2. Best used where large complex datasets need shared management and reporting dashboards
  3. The free licence is of very limited use and one would be better off focusing on Excel
  4. Small organisations will have to purchase a Pro licence for each user costing about €120 per user per annum
  5. Microsoft are developing Power Bi and updating it’s features regularly
